“Great to see some English traditions alive and kicking”
The second BIG Morris festival took to the streets of Lincoln on the 8th September 2007. Building on the success of the festival last year, the event saw thirteen different Morris dance groups from Lincolnshire and the East Midlands dancing across the city. Displays were held along the High Street, City Square, Guildhall Street, outside the Collection and around the Castle and Cathedral area. Organised by the Mini Morris Company, the festival celebrates the tradition of Morris dancing in Lincolnshire and the East Midlands, and provides opportunities for people to celebrate English music, dance and song.
“Absolutely amazing. What a great performance to come across”
Helped by great weather and audiences, each Morris side danced at various locations around the High Street and Bailgate areas, showing the rich variety of English traditional dance – an exciting collection of swords, sticks, hankies, flower garlands and clog dancing. The culmination of the dancing took place with a massed performance outside the Cathedral, where each side performed to a large crowd of spectators.
“Lovely to see the dancing. Brightens Lincoln up!”
The participants took a well-earned break to refill stomachs and tankards at lunchtime, with live music and singing at the Tap and Spile and the Drill Hall. After the massed dance in Minster Yard, more music and song took place at the Victoria on Union Road, followed by a grand ceilidh at Lincoln Drill Hall. Over 150 people joined Morris dancers and local band Pigeon English for an excellent evening of traditional dancing.
Throughout the day, the Morris sides collected money for Lincoln Women’s Aid, raising over £350 to support their work tackling domestic violence. The Mini Morris Company would like to say a very BIG thank you to all the teams and musicians who played and danced, the spectators who gave such generous donations, the local businesses that supported the event and the volunteer organisers, musicians and stewards.
“Many thanks for bringing this wonderful show to Lincoln and increasing visitor numbers”
